Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, expects 600 million mobile handsets to be sold worldwide this year, an increase of 25% on 2003.

Chief executive Jorma Ollila told journalists at a launch event for new handsets that sales growth would be driven in particular by devices incorporating digital cameras, which were expected to clock up sales of 200 million units, against 50 million last year.

'Smart' phones, which feature multimedia capacities, were likely to see sales of over 20 million this year, and four times that annual number by 2007, Ollila said.

Ollila, whose company saw its worldwide market share slip to 29.2% in the first quarter of 2004 from 35%  in all of 2003, reiterated Nokia's target of a market share of 40%, but would not be drawn on a timetable.

He added that he would make no forecasts on the second, third or fourth quarters.
