BT network move to save a billion

British telecoms group BT has announced plans to transform its UK network, saying this will save it £1 billion a year by 2008/2009.

BT said the five-year programme would underpin its plans for a new generation of fixed and mobile phone communications services.

The company said its total investment would be within its previously announced £3 billion a year.

BT said the plans would drive a 'radical simplification' of its operations by creating a single network for all services, enabling it to launch new services faster than it can at the moment.
