Irish Broadband awarded nine new licences

Irish Broadband has been awarded nine more licences by ComReg under the second phase of the 3.5G wireless licensing scheme.

The new licences are for Athlone, Arklow, Ennis, Kilkenny, Letterkenny, Newbridge, Portlaoise, Wexford and Carlow.

The company says it will be able to provide 'true' broadband - high speed, always-on, wireless internet access - to business and home internet users.

'Following on the initial licence awards of last year these new licences provide Irish Broadband with a platform to provide our service on a nationwide basis', Paul Doody, managing director of Irish Broadband said.

'We are investing in developing and upgrading our offering and will be in a position to move into these new markets within the coming year,' he added.

Broadband had previously secured seven licences for Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Drogheda and Dundalk and started its national rollout in Cork in May.
