IBM pumps €22m into Dublin R&D lab

IBM Corporation is to invest €22m in developing its Irish Research and Development software facility - IBM Dublin Software Laboratory (DSL) - in Santry, Dublin.

The investment by the information technology giant is supported by IDA Ireland and is part of IBM's global strategic development of its software business and to retain its leadership position in the middleware software market. Middleware is software that enables one software application to communicate with another.

'This is a notable development and is line with the Government's policy for the growth of R&D in Ireland and for IDA's strategy of winning an increasing share of the growing knowledge-led global investments,' commented Tanaiste Mary Harney today.

IBM said the decision to invest in its Santry operation was influenced by the availability of the necessary skills, the growing emphasis on scientific research by Science Foundation Ireland and the support of IDA Ireland.

Over the past two years, DSL has focused on building its technical leadership. Last year it launched the IBM Extreme Blue progamme here which currently involves eight engineers. Earlier this year DSL launched the Dublin Centre for Advanced Studies and selected seven Irish scientists to work with the lab on innovative research.

IBM employs over 4,000 people in several operations around Dublin - in manufacturing, eProcurement, sales and marketing, software development, consultancy, services and customer support and treasury operations.
