The world's second largest mobile phone maker Motorola last night reported strong than expected sales and profits for its first quarter.
Net profits were $609m, compared with just $169m in the same period a year earlier. Sales jumped by 42% to $8.6 billion, way above analysts' forecasts.
Analysts said Motorola had benefited at the expense of rival Nokia, which earlier this month shocked investors by reporting a drop in sales.
The company's handset division saw sales rise 67% to $4.1 billion, boosted by the popularity of phones with colour screens and cameras.
Motorola said it expected handset sales to surge by another 60-80% in the second quarter.
