Independent News & Media has launched its compact version of the Irish Independent.
The move follows the success of the tabloid edition of the Independent in Britain.
Asked about the future of the broadsheet edition, Independent deputy managing director Brendan McCabe said the company would be monitoring the new product on a daily basis. He pointed out the London Independent on Saturday was now completely tabloid.
Fiona Scott, managing director of McConnells Media, said she expected the new version to take off, adding that she expected the Irish Times to go tabloid eventually. She said it could be the beginning of the end for the broadsheet, though this would take some time.
