Xilinx to invest in Queens research link

US microchip designer Xilinx is to invest $500,000 in a major research link-up with Queens University in Belfast.

The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Queens will work with Xilinx to create futuristic new microchip concepts for use in telecommunications networks.

Xilinx has its European headquarters in Dublin, where 400 people currently work.

Xilinx specialises in making microchips which can be programmed to carry out different functions after they are manufactured and after installation in electronic devices.
