Radio 1 national share down three

According to the latest JNLR/TNS mrbi survey results for the year to June 2003 RTÉ's Radio 1 is still the most popular station in Dublin, with a 33% share of listeners, but this figure has fallen by two percentage points in the period.

Nationally Radio 1 was down three to 28% while 2FM fell one to 26% and Lyric FM was also down one to 3%. The independent commercial station Today FM was unchanged at 16%

In a statement RTÉ said the figures brought particularly good news for 2FM with significant increases in listenership across the board. On Radio 1 Morning Ireland remains the most listened to radio programme in Ireland, while 5-7 Live is the top drive time show in the country.

The managing director of RTÉ Radio, Adrian Moynes said the figures contain some good news for RTÉ Radio. He said it had held its position in a market which offered more choice and put audience loyalty under pressure.

There was no breakthrough for Dublin's three new independent stations which all failed to increase their listenership. Newstalk 106 and Country 106.8 FM both failed to break through the 2% barrier, while Spin FM remains stuck on 4%.

Nationally the 'reach' figure for any local station remained the same at 53%, while RTÉ Radio 1, 2FM and Lyric recorded slight decreases in their listened yesterday figure.
