12-member science board is named

Tanaiste Mary Harney has named a 12-member board for Science Foundation Ireland, following the body's establishment on a statutory basis.

Former NUI Galway president Dr Pat Fottrell will chair the body, which is investing €646m in academic researchers and research teams on behalf of the Government. Frank McCabe, a former Intel vice-president, will be deputy chairperson.

The other members are: Erich Bloch, a former director of the US National Science Foundation; Ned Costello from the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment; Vice Provost of Trinity College Dublin, Dr Jane Grimson; Dr Anita Jones from the University of Virginia in the US; Dr Kristina Johnson, Dean of the School of Engineering at Due University, North Carolina; Dr Martina Newell-McGloughlin, an authority on biotechnology from the University of California; Dr Jim Mountjoy, founder of software company Euristix; Higher Education Authority chairman Dr Don Thornhill; former Forfas CEO John Travers; and current SFI director general Dr William C Harris.
