Mobile operator O2 Ireland's customer base in the Republic of Ireland grew by 17,000 to 1,272,000 in its first quarter to the end of June, according to figures from its parent company mmO2.
Average revenue per user was €545, in line with the previous quarter and 1.5% higher than in the same period last year. ARPU in mmO2's main markets - Germany and the UK - increased in Q1 but is still lower than the Irish figure.
The number of SMS messages sent in Ireland jumped by 36.8% on Q1 last year to 2.42 billion.
O2 Ireland has also announced a new roaming service called All Ireland. It says the new service is aimed at reducing the costs for people making and receiving calls on their mobile phones to numbers within Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. O2 claims that the savings on mobile phone costs to Irish customers could be up to 70%.
