RTE faces new ComReg charge

The Commission for Communications Regulation is planning to levy an administrative charge on RTE and independent radio and television broadcasters to fund the costs of regulation.

ComReg today issued a consultation document on fees and charges to be paid by broadcast distributors, including cable and MMDS operators.

It proposed a charge of €100 per transmitter, which would imply a charge of €60,000 for RTE and €16,000 for independent broadcasters contracted to the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland.

The same charge would apply to future free-to-air digital terrestrial networks.

ComReg is proposing to charge cable, MMDS and deflector operations 50 cent per subscriber. This is instead of the 3.5% of turnover companies like Chorus and NTL currently pay.
