200 Flextronics jobs to go in Cork

200 jobs are to go at the electronic components company Flextronics in Cork. The announcement was made to over 1,100 staff this afternoon.

100 permanent staff are to be made redundant, while 100 temporary employees are also to be laid off.

The multinational has so far refused to comment on the job losses but union sources say the moves comes after Flextronics lost a major contract last week to another Flextronics plant abroad, possibly in the Far East.

The contract was for memory boards for another Cork-based company, EMC in Ballincollig.

Last year the multinational closed its Limerick and Tullamore operations with the loss of 680 jobs. At the time the company blamed the continuing weakness in the global electronics sector.
