Lucent to cut 120 Dublin jobs

US telecoms company Lucent Technologies is to lay off 120 workers from its Network Operations System division in Cherrywood, South Dublin. Employees were informed of the decision on Tuesday.

A workforce of about 60 will remain in Cherrywood, while the company also employs 350 people in Blanchardstown.

Redundant workers have been told they can apply for jobs in Spain and India and they are expected to be let go by September.

Lucent has insisted that it is committed to its Irish operations, saying there is no question mark over the future of the Blanchardstown plant, which is owns. In a statement it said its Irish workers will position the company well when the market upturn occurs.

Lucent makes equipment for mobile phone companies, optical, data and voice networking. It has posted 11 quarterly losses in a row and made 50,000 staff redundant worldwide during the last two years.
