WorldCom could shed 6,000 - report

WorldCom could announce plans to lay off up to 6,000 workers as early as today in an effort to emerge from bankruptcy protection later this year, according to a report in the Washington Post.

The layoffs would come just months after 17,000 jobs were shed last year. WorldCom employs around 130 people in the Republic, having let 30 people go last September. The company says no significant Irish business has been lost since WorldCom filed the largest bankruptcy in US corporate history in July.

The filing came after the telecoms group, with 60,000 employees, restated $7.68 billion in questionable accounting figures.

WorldCom is also dealing with the aftermath of dozens of bad investments it made during the 1990s while acquiring companies. The company aims to emerge from bankruptcy by mid-year.
