Price hikes will boost Indo revenue by €6m

Both the Irish Times and Irish Independent have increased their cover price to €1.40 in the last two days, a 7.7% increase.

NCB Stockbrokers estimates that Independent News and Media (INM) will increase annual revenues by €5.3m per year through the move. It also estimates that a five cent increase in the price of the Sunday Independent will add €0.8m to revenues.

Based on last year's circulation of 119,252 copies per day, the Irish Times will increase its revenues by €3.7m.

INM's share price has dropped substantially in the last year, from a high of €2.88 to €1.36 today, following a slowdown in global advertising markets.

NCB Stockbrokers said that INM's leading position in the Irish market gave the group significant pricing power.

Meanwhile the Irish Times has had its own financial crisis, laying off 250 staff in a dramatic effort to cut costs.

The increases in Irish broadsheet prices follow similar moves by the UK quality press.
