MmO2, Europe's fifth largest wireless telecoms company, has reported solid rises in average revenue and subscriber numbers for the quarter ended June, helped by the launch of its O2 brand in four countries.
The group reported a 12-month rolling UK average revenue per user (ARPU) of £234 sterling for its first quarter, down on £251 one year ago but up from the £231 reported in the previous quarter.
The German figure rose sharply to £203 from £195 one quarter before. MmO2 also added 292,000 new customers in the quarter, of which 86% signed up to contracts.
O2 Ireland saw a small decline of 19,000 customers to 1.161 million, but ARPU rose to £333 (€518) from £329 (€511) last quarter.
Most mobile operators have moved away from pre-pay models because contract customers tend to spend significantly more.
The company has spent millions on marketing in the past quarter to coincide with the April launch of O2 in previously separate-branded markets in Britain, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands.
MmO2 has had a rough ride since demerging from former telecoms monopoly British Telecom last November, as investors suffer a crisis of confidence about potential mobile revenues around the sector. European industry heavyweight Vodafone has almost halved in value in the last six months.
