Eircom says its customers will be able to send and receive text messages over landline phones from September.
The development is part of a €20m plan by the company to upgrade its infrastructure and bring in new digital cordless phones.
Apart from SMS, the new 4012 phones will also have other features including caller identification, address book, speaker-phone facility and time, date and alarm.
The 4012 range has been developed with Siemens and the cost ranges from €170.
