125 temporary workers at an electronics plant in Fermoy in County Cork have been laid off. The workers, at the US owned SCI Ireland plant, were told on Monday.
According to HR Manager Cass Fitzpatrick, the layoffs are due to the downturn in demand for their products and the uncertainty in world markets because of the events of September 11.
'The company has a core of temporary employees that we take on when we are busy. We would hope that we would be able to take them back on again.'
She added that management would be working very hard to safeguard the remaining 600 permanent jobs at the plant.
* 40 jobs are to be lost at a Galway based engineering company which manufactures components for the telecommunications and computer industry.
The US owned APW company blames the job losses on the global downturn for its products. APW Galway Limited has a total workforce of 126.
In a statement this morning, it said that it deeply regretted having to reduce its workforce and said it was committed to supporting it employees during 'this difficult time'.
