Death of a brand - Eircell

Eircell will be renamed Vodafone by the end of June next year, following the purchase of the company by the British mobile phone giant last May.

From Monday, Eircell will operate under the dual brand Eircell-Vodafone, before making a full transition to the Vodafone name next year.

Eircell's head of brand marketing Kate Hill said Eircell stands to benefit from the huge global strength of the Vodafone brand, particularly its massive sports sponsorships of the Ferrari Formula One team, and Manchester United football club.

Hill would not disclose the cost of the rebranding, but said it would not require large additional resources above Eircell's usual marketing spend. Last year Eircell spent £28 million promoting its brand.

She said the company was concerned not to lose any customers in the transition, and was also worried about the British identity associated with Vodafone.

Earlier this month Eircell rival Digifone announced it was dropping the name ESAT and would also move to the global identity of its parent company - BT spinoff mmO2.
