Eircom has launched its ADSL broadband Internet service, to be called Eircom i-stream. It is to make a capital investment of 125 million euros in the project over five years.
Eircom says the i-stream service will be initially targeted at business and personal customers who are heavy Internet users.
They will be able to use a single telephone line for voice/fax calls and for simultaneous Internet access.
The company says ADSL technology is up to 30 times faster than a standard telephone line and eliminates the need for customers to dial for access, connect and disconnect from the Internet. It operates on the same copper line as the telephone.
Eircom is offering four levels of service depending on customer requirements.
Chief executive Alfie Kane called today's announcement a 'milestone', saying he was confident that the service would deliver the best service to customers at a competitive price.
