Computer manufacturer Gateway yesterday said it would complete its withdrawal from the Irish market by the end of the year.
The company said it had completed a consultation process with representatives of Irish and UK employees who were losing their jobs.
Last month Gateway announced it was to close its operation in Clonshaugh Co. Dublin, with the loss of 900 jobs.
Gateway decided to pull out of the European computer market to focus on the US following an intensive price war with other major personal computer makers, Dell and Compaq.
Dell looks to have come out on top in the battle of the big three, after last week Hewlett Packard announced it was taking over Compaq in a $25 billion deal.
France is now the only European country in which Gateway is present. The company also said last night that the halt to European operations would lead to an exceptional charge of $200m, already included in the $475m charge announced in August.
