Motorola warns of flat third quarter

Wireless technology giant Motorola said today it expected sales in the third quarter to be flat compared with the second quarter as a result of weaker than expected overall industry demand.

It also said it planned to cut another 2,000 jobs. The company had said previously that it expected third quarter sales to be up 5% compared with the second quarter.

Motorola said it expects to report a loss of five cents to eight cents a share in the third quarter compared with an 11 cent loss reported in the second quarter. It said analysts on average were expecting a loss of 5 cents a share.

The company said it was cutting another 2,000 jobs in its infrastructure unit by the end of the year, bringing the total number of company-wide reductions to 32,000.

Motorola has an Irish workforce of over 600. 620 people work in the company's research and development division in Cork, while 15 work in sales and marketing in Dublin.
