Telecoms regulator permits wireless acess

The telecoms regulator is allowing the provision of short range public access services and is reviewing the possibility of licensing further FWA spectrum.

Fixed wireless access (FWA) is a way of connecting to the telecoms network using radio rather than copper-fibre optic wires.

The regulator, Etain Doyle said that this would enable network operators and their customers to gain full advantage from emerging technologies now available.

Operators will be free to use these bands, with certain restrictions, if they have a telecoms service licence.

The facility may provide localised services in areas not currently served.
