Hewlett-Packard to axe 6,000 global jobs

High-tech group Hewlett-Packard is to slash another 6,000 jobs, but a company spokesperson said she was confident the job cuts would have little impact on its Irish operations. The company has a total workforce of 2,200 in Leixlip, Co Kildare and Blackrock in Dublin.

The majority of the cuts will come in the fourth quarter due to deteriorating global economic conditions and spending weakness in technology. This will result in savings of about $500 million annually.

'Economies around the world continue to weaken as we move through the quarter,' said Carly Fiorina, HP chairman and chief executive officer in a statement.

'These reductions are incremental to the actions we've already taken in the areas of marketing restructuring and management span of control and do not include the impact of outsourcing and divestiture decisions,' she said.

For the third quarter, the company said it forecasts a revenue decline of 14-16% year-on-year, including a 3% negative currency impact.
