Compaq job losses hit Europe hard

Compaq's European operations are to bear almost half the 4,000 job cuts planned by the company, with 1,750 to be laid off from the company's Europe, Middle East and Africa division (EMEA).

Compaq currently employs 2,200 in Dublin, Galway and Belfast. A company spokeswoman said no job loss figures were available yet for specific marets, but in the past Compaq has said 140 staff could lose their jobs.

According to this morning's Wall Street Journal Europe, 830 jobs will be cut in Britain, Germany and Switzerland, as the company centralises its European finance and marketing operations.

Compaq's operations in Ireland mainly consist of sales, technical support, and software development. The majority of job cuts are likely to come in the company's manufacturing division.

Last week the Texas-based computer giant forecast second-quarter revenues of $8.4 billion, short of an already lowered estimate of $9.2 billion.

Compaq hopes to reap $900 million in annual cost savings as a result of this year's restructuring.
