The Dail's Enterprise & Transport Committee has decided not to hold a full scale inquiry into the awarding of the country's second mobile phone licence to Esat Digifone.
The matter became an issue some weeks ago when a controversy blew up over a £33,000 donation to Fine Gael from the Norwegian company, Telenor, which had a shareholding in Esat.
At the height of the row the Progressive Democrats asked the committee to investigate the circumstances in which Esat won the contract.
However, the legal adviser to the Oireachtas told the committee it would be unwise for it do so because the matter had been referred to the Moriarty Tribunal.
