Nortel, Xilinx and Queens in joint lab venture

Two leading multinational corporations, Nortel Networks and Xilinx, on Friday announced their combined financial and technological support for a new Programmable Systems Laboratory at Queen's University in Belfast.

The new laboratory will carry out high level research and development work over the next three years.

The laboratory at Queens will have access to the research and development facilities of both Xilinx and Nortel Networks.

Nortel will provide the new lab with information on the applications of programmable communications technology, while Xilinx will provide the development environment for the devices, software and tools to enable research on implementation techniques and applications.

Xilinx is the world's leading provider of programmable logic and related development systems software. Its advanced research and development, engineering and operations centre in Dublin will be the main contact point for the new programme.

Xilinx currently employs 360 people in Dublin, and recently announced a £41 million expansion of its Irish operations with the creation of 500 jobs over the next five years.

Nortel Networks is a global internet and communications leader with capabilities spanning optical, wireless, local internet and e-business.
