Gateway announces first set of Irish job losses

Computer manufacturer Gateway today confirmed that 28 jobs were being cut today at its plant in Clonshaugh, Co Dublin.

Earlier this month Gateway headquarters in the US announced that 10% of its workforce worldwide would be cut following a downturn in the personal computer market.

1,600 people are employed by Gateway in Dublin. Irish managing director Mike Moloney would not put a figure on the final number of lay-offs, but said it was still being guided by the 10% figure.

He added, however, that the company was still in the process of reviewing demand within each of its markets and the final figure would depend on the outcome.

Mr Moloney said Gateway was aiming to complete the process as quickly as possible.

On future prospects for PC demand in Europe, he said the next three to six months were unpredictable but there was still potential for growth as penetration was still half the level of that in the US.
