Sun shines with 56% second quarter profits growth

Sun Microsystems last night reported net profits of $552m in the second quarter of its fiscal year 2001, a 56% jump over the same period last year.

Sun, which supplies computer hardware and software, said earnings per share came to 16 cents, compared with 10 cents in the 2000 quarter and in line with market expectations.

Sales in the quarter rose 44% to $5.1bn. Orders increased 32% in the three months to December 31 to just under $5bn.

For the full fiscal year 2001 Sun foresees a 30% to 35% increase in sales.
