Apple Computer, which employs 1,000 people in Cork, last night reported a $195m loss in its for its first quarter to the end of December, compared with a $183m profit in the same period a year earlier.
This was its first loss for three years, but the loss of 58 cents per share was not as steep as most analysts had predicted. Revenues for the quarter were $1bn, down 57% from the year ago quarter.
Company officials said the computer maker, once a market leader, had made changes to restore profitability.
'Our cash position remains very strong, and we are planning a return to sustained profitability beginning this quarter,' said Fred Anderson, Apple's chief financial officer. He said he expected revenues for the fiscal year to be about $6bn.
