Irish job losses expected at Gateway Computers

Jobs are to go at computer manufacturer Gateway's operation in Clonshaugh in Co Dublin, after the company announced last night that it plans to cut its global workforce by 10% in the first quarter of this year.

The decision followed another set of disappointing quarterly figures announced last night, with profits $88 million down on last year.

Mike Maloney, Gateway's vice president of client relations, said the Irish operation would have to take its share of global cost cutting plans but would not say how many of the company's 1,600 staff are to be laid off at this stage.

Gateway manufactures computers for the European market and runs technical support services from its Dublin base.

Alongside other computer manufacturers the company has suffered from the fall off in global demand for PCs, and also been hit by poor sentiment towards the technology sector in stock markets.
