The growth of the mobile phone industry may be even slower than feared, if Finnish giant Nokia is correct in its estimate that handset unit sales were just 405 million in 2000.
In an industry which has been banking on unit sales of between 400 and 420 million, Nokia's total market sales prediction is at the lower end of that range.
If Nokia is accurate in its forecast, it achieved an increased market share for the full year of 31.6% as it claimed to have sold 128 million handsets itself.
This number is some seven million units below the average of analysts' expectations.
