Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe has said that the budget for An Garda Síochána is to be increased by €60m or 3.5%.
He said this will allow for the recruitment of up to 800 gardaí and will support reform within the force.
An additional €60m is to be allocated to the broader justice sector, which is an increase of approx 7%.
This will be used for the provision of additional asylum accommodation, widening of the Magdalene scheme, and funding of reforms within the Department of Justice and Equality and the Courts Service.
Mr Donohoe said this funding would also be used to address the pressures on Criminal Legal Aid and in Prisons, we well as responding to the demands faced by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner in its EU-wide role.
The 2019 capital allocation of €220m includes the construction of the Forensic Science Laboratory, investment in Garda ICT and the purchase of garda vehicles.
Works at Limerick prison will also be included.
Funding for the Defence Forces will see €29m provided for additional investment projects for 2019.
This will include equipment replacement and infrastructure development across the army, Air Corps, and Naval Service.
