Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald has again insisted that whatever happens after Brexit, there cannot be a hard border on the island of Ireland.

Ms McDonald said even if the draft deal between the EU and the UK is defeated and there is a hard Brexit, the Government must ensure there is no return to the border of the past.

Her comments come after Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the draft agreement is the only way to avoid a hard border.

Ms McDonald, who was speaking at a meeting of the Sinn Féin leadership in Dublin, said the proposed agreement goes some way to protecting Ireland, describing it as "the least worst option".

She said that while there is no perfect deal, the proposal "mitigates the very worst affects of Brexit and so to that extent, it is worthy of support".

Ms McDonald said a hard Brexit without a deal would be "a very difficult and dangerous scenario" and it would be "absolutely catastrophic for the island, the economy, politics and the peace agreement, so it can’t be allowed to happen".
