As UK Theresa May headed to EU Summit in Salzburg this week, the expectation was that her Brexit Chequers White Paper would be met with a muted, but not hostile response, relieving her of some pressure before her party's conference later this month.

But in the town made famous by Mozart and 'The Sound of Music', Chequers hit a bum note.
