Everything is now falling into place for a new government to take office next Wednesday.

It will be a coalition involving Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and seven of the Regional Independents.

The final obstacles to agree the deal should be overcome this evening.

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael hold a combined 86 seats.

However, they require a single vote to gain a Dáil majority and this arrangement would give them six votes to spare.

That would be a comfortable working majority to implement its policies along with five budgets.

It is not clear right now if the two Healy-Rae TDs will also support that government given that a super junior post is not going their way.

Both the Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil parliamentary parties will meet tomorrow in order to look over the draft programme for government.

That should pave the way for the parties to consult their members across the country.

They will get to vote on the deal in the coming days.

Explained:
What is a Programme for Government?

Fianna Fáil members will do this at 5pm on Sunday at an Ard Fheis in Dublin.

While Fine Gael will hold five meetings across the country from Thursday to Saturday.

It is expected that both parties will give the Programme for Government the thumbs up and pave the way for the election of a new Taoiseach next Wednesday.

Due to Fianna Fáil winning ten more seats than Fine Gael in the General Election, Micheál Martin will be elected Taoiseach first.

After he takes office on Wednesday, he is expected to remain in the role well into 2027 before the role rotates and the Fine Gael leader takes the top job.

Fianna Fáil is also set to hold a greater number of Cabinet posts.

The final piece of the government jigsaw, the appointment of Junior Ministers is to take place a week later.
