Trump: Impeachment or live to fight another day?

Whether it was the 'Access Hollywood' tapes, hush money payments to women or claims of Russian collusion, Donald Trump has survived controversies that would destroy any other politician.

He has done this by rallying his support base and uniting Republicans behind him.

This time is different because he is facing a formal impeachment inquiry but President Trump is using the same tactics; attack your opponents, claim it’s all politically motivated and dismiss the whole thing as a ‘witch hunt’.

Efforts have been made to vilify the whistleblower in this case. The person has been portrayed as biased and partisan but the whistleblower’s boss defended their actions.

Testifying before Congress, acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire said "I believe the whistleblower is operating in good faith … I think the whistleblower did the right thing. I think he followed the law every step of the way."

The focus is now switching from the alleged wrongdoing to the alleged cover-up and this could be problematic for the US president.

It’s claimed a secret computer server was used to hide the details of Donald Trump’s controversial phone call with the Ukrainian president and that it was not the only time sensitive information was improperly stored in this way.

If this is the case, surely an electronic trail exists?

This is something that will be explored in detail by Democrats over the coming weeks.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi says there is no timeline and there will be no rush to judgement.

In time, that judgement could end up being an impeachment vote but if Republicans decide to stand by their man, Donald Trump will live to fight another day.
