A new pilot scrappage scheme is hoping to encourage motorists to buy electric cars.
An incentive of €5,000 would be offered to eligible applicants who permanently dispose of a vehicle more than 13 years old.
The €10m pilot project will see 65% of the funding - €6.5m - ringfenced for people living outside the major cities of Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.
RTÉ's Fran McNulty and Paul Cunningham discuss what is known about the plan, and how it is designed to favour people living in rural areas.
UK riots: The murder of Henry Nowak
Protesters clashed with police in Southampton last night, close to where 18-year-old student Henry Nowak was handcuffed by police as he lay dying after being stabbed.
Mr Nowak was attacked on 3 December 2025 by 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa, who initially told police that he had been the victim of a racist attack.
Digwa was given a life sentence on Monday with a minimum of 21 years in prison.
Journalist Vincent McAviney told Behind the Story that police bodycam footage was released with the consent of Mr Nowak's family and shows how officers restrained Mr Novak.
"He is on the ground, struggling to sit upright and he is telling them multiple times that he was the one that was attacked," he said.
"There is somewhat indifference from the police.
"They indeed then handcuff him and some moments later he does die from his injuries."
Mr McAviney said the Hampshire police force is now under investigation and is reviewing how it responds to arrests.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has been widely criticised by politicians for his response to the release of the bodycam footage, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer accusing Mr Farage of exploiting the death of Henry Novak.
