An investigation is under way following the death of a man in his 30s who swam across the River Liffey following a reported assault in Dublin's War Memorial Gardens on Saturday night.

Gardaí have said they are investigating "all the circumstances" surrounding the incident, which happened at around 10.20pm, and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The man was treated by fire brigade personnel after swimming across the river to lands adjacent to Chapelizod Road, following a reported assault in the vicinity of the gardens in Islandbridge.

He was then brought to St James’ Hospital, where he died yesterday.

Gardaí have said no cause of death has yet been determined, and that a post-mortem examination will determine the course of their investigation.

They have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.

Gardaí are in particular appealing for anyone who was travelling in the area, or any road users with dashcam footage, between 9pm and 10.45pm on Saturday to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Clondalkin Garda Station on 01 666 7600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
