Motorist at twice speed limit among 100 detected speeding

A motorist travelling at 130km/h in a 60km/h zone - more than twice the speed limit - in Co Cavan was among over 100 drivers detected speeding yesterday during a garda roads policing operation.

The operation is running over the course of the June bank holiday weekend, having begun at 7am on Thursday, and ending next Tuesday.

The driver found to be doing over twice the legal limit was travelling on the R188 at Drung in Cavan.

One driver was found to be travelling at 85km/h in a 50km/h on Watery Lane in Swords in Dublin, while another on the N11 at Newtownmountkennedy in Wicklow was detected doing 141km/h in a 100km/h zone.

A further driver in Co Meath was caught travelling at 124km/h in an 80km/h zone on the N51 at Dunmoe.

So far this weekend, 56 people have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Gardaí have also said that so far during the operation, over 115 drivers have been caught on their mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

Gardaí have urged people to exercise caution when using the roads this weekend, and be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists.
