Mourners at the funeral service of Alex Coughlan, who died in hospital after being assaulted in Blanchardstown almost two weeks ago, have heard how he was "the glue" of his family.

Family and friends of Mr Coughlan gathered at Staffords Funeral Home in Ballyfermot this morning for his funeral service.

A Leinster rugby cap and a model of a mutant ninja turtle were among items offered as gifts symbolising Mr Coughlan's life.

Mourners heard how he was a proud person, who was full of laughter and joy, and that he spread that to others.

He was described as "the glue" of his family, who said he always supported others and took younger members of the family under his wing.

Mr Coughlan, who would have been 38 today, was a big sports fan, and also worked for insurance firm Bupa.

His employer described him as having "superpowers", as well as an "ability to listen, honesty, and gentleness" in how he conducted himself in his job.

Mr Coughlan was found unconscious on the Mill Road in Blanchardstown on 17 May.

He died in hospital three days later.

Two teenagers are currently before the courts in connection with the case.

His funeral post described how his family have been left "horrifically torn" by his death and that he will be "forever missed".
