The new Iranian Ambassador to Ireland will officially take up his duties almost six months after being prevented from doing so due to the regime's response to protests in Iran.

The formal ceremony in January was postponed following a decision by the Department of Foreign Affairs, which deemed it "inappropriate" to accredit the diplomat amid a severe crackdown by Iranian authorities on nationwide demonstrations against the government.

Significant numbers of Iranians were killed or injured and there was a communications blackout.

At Áras an Uachtaráin today, Iran's Ambassador Eshagh Alhabib presented his Letter of Credence to President Catherine Connolly.

Upon their arrival in Ireland, and before they can carry out their work, ambassadors must be officially welcomed by the President.

They are officially accredited once the President accepts their credentials at a ceremony in the State Reception Room.

The ambassadors to Portugal and India were also accredited at this afternoon’s ceremony.

The ambassadors were accompanied to and from Áras an Uachtaráin by an escort of honour consisting of a motorcycle detachment.

A guard of honour was provided by the Air Corps.
