The man who died after he was struck by a bus at Dublin Airport yesterday has been named as racehorse owner and publisher John Fleming.

The incident happened on the Corballis Road shortly after midnight.

Horse Racing Ireland said Mr Fleming, who was a Kilkenny accountant in his 60s, had published the Irish Racing Year Book for over 20 years and was a "very proud" owner of racehorse Navassa Island.

In a statement on social media, its CEO Suzanne Eade said: "Like everyone connected to Irish racing, I am very saddened to learn of the sudden passing of John Fleming."

Ms Eade said Mr Fleming had "sheer enthusiasm for racing".

"He was also a very proud racehorse owner and was on hand to greet his mare Navassas Island after she won the Listed Irish EBF Cork Stakes on Easter Sunday.

"On behalf of HRI, I wish to offer our sincere sympathies to John's family and his many friends and associates. May he rest in peace," she added.

Yesterday, daa said it was deeply saddened by Mr Fleming’s death.

The airport operator said emergency services and Airport Police attended the scene immediately, adding that An Garda Síochána is carrying out a full investigation, which daa will assist with.

Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses, or any road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) who were in the area 11.45pm on Wednesday and 12.15am yesterday to contact Ballymun Garda Station on 01 666 4400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
