A woman in her 40s and a teenage girl have been arrested as part of the investigation into a serious assault in Co Tipperary at the weekend in which a woman in her 20s was critically injured.

Scarlett Faulkner was attacked on the R494 at Birdhill near the M7 at around 5.30pm on Saturday, 21 March.

She suffered severe head injuries and was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick, before later being transferred to Cork University Hospital.

Ms Faulkner, a 29-year-old member of the Traveller community, was travelling in a car along the R494, the route linking Birdhill with the M7 between Limerick and Nenagh, when it is understood the vehicle was deliberately forced off the road.

She was then pulled from the car and assaulted by two individuals, who were reportedly armed with weapons.

A number of other people were present during the incident.

Gardaí from Nenagh arrested the woman and teenage girl at an address in Limerick this morning.

They are being questioned at garda stations in Co Tipperary in relation to the incident.

The attack occurred on a busy stretch of road serving Birdhill, Ballina, Killaloe and southeast Clare.

In a statement, gardaí said they are aware of video footage of the incident circulating online and have asked people not to share it on social media platforms or messaging apps, and forward it to gardaí at Nenagh Garda Station.

Gardaí are also continuing to appeal for any witnesses to contact them.

They are seeking any information on the movements of two vehicles - a grey 162 Ford Transit van and a blue 161 Volkswagen Touran people carrier, which were travelling in convoy or driving dangerously in and around Birdhill village, the townlands of Cooleen, Crag Cross, Shower Cross, Kylebeg, Annaholty and Thornhill in Co Tipperary between 4.30pm and 5.30pm on Saturday.

Any road users who were on the R494 between Birdhill and the M7 motorway between 5pm and 6pm on Saturday and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Nenagh Garda Station on 067 50450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
