The Department of Housing has warned about scam messages or online posts claiming to be from Housing for All or Ireland's Housing Plan, offering accommodation to people.

In a statement, the department urged people to be extremely cautious, ensure they are using official departmental websites, and never to engage with links that seem suspicious.

"As with all scams, these attempts purport to be from official sites and we would urge the public to be extremely cautious, to ensure that they are using official departmental websites, and not to click on or reply to links which appear suspicious."

It added that the department does not directly engage with people regarding accommodation provision and never requests personal details.

The department advised anyone who is approached by an entity "purporting to be from the Government, and seeking details or payment regarding homes for sale", to contact An Garda Síochána.

In the event someone has exchanged information with the operator of a scam, they should alert their bank or relevant organisation to warn that their data may be compromised.

The department added that it is reporting the matter to An Garda Síochána.
