A new national digital citizenship programme is being launched for 5th and 6th class pupils.
The Switched On Programme has been created to assist and support teachers in educating pupils on how to be safe, responsible, and competent internet users, as they prepare to transition into post-primary education.
Throughout the course, students will explore the opportunities of digital technology while developing critical thinking skills, and practical strategies for staying safe online.
It also will help them develop healthy digital habits and understand their rights and responsibilities in the digital environment.
Throughout the programme, students will be encouraged to be "active digital citizens" in a variety of online activities such as creating or publishing content, socialising, learning, researching and playing games.
Each module includes take-home resources to encourage meaningful conversations between children and parents/guardians about online life.
The programme was developed by Webwise, in collaboration with and supported by Coimisiún na Meán.
The new course will be officially launched today by Online Safety Commissioner Niamh Hodnett.
"This important programme informs primary school children about online safety, their digital footprint and how to develop healthy habits online," Ms Hodnett said.
"It prompts a discussion about their online life with parents and guardians. It also makes children aware of their rights online," she added.
Following today's launch, Switched On will be available for free to all primary schools throughout Ireland.
"The programme provides a thoughtful, age-appropriate introduction to key concepts like online safety, privacy, digital wellbeing, digital footprints, rights online and media literacy," said Minister for Education and Youth Hildegarde Naughton.
"By empowering our learners with the skills to become responsible digital citizens, we’re not just protecting them, we’re preparing them to thrive," Ms Naughton said.
Jane McGarrigle, National Co-ordinator, Webwise, said children are spending more time online and accessing digital technologies at younger ages than ever before.
"Switched On responds to this reality by fostering digital literacy from an early age, ensuring that children can benefit from the opportunities of the online world while managing its challenges," Ms McGarrigle said.
