Behind the Story: Remember the 'GPO Girl'? There's an update!

A new development has brought the so-called 'GPO Girl' back into the spotlight.

The woman, who was actually aged 23, made headlines after she was found wandering outside the GPO in Dublin in 2013.

She refused to speak, and a massive international campaign was launched to try and identify her - with gardaí releasing a picture of her to find out who she was.

It later emerged her name was Samantha Azzopardi, an Australian woman who had created more than 100 false identities.

She was deported to Australia and subsequently jailed - but was scheduled for release last October.

In 2023, an RTÉ Documentary On One podcast series, Finding Samantha, had listeners gripped and shot to the top of the charts.

Update

The producer of the series, Nicoline Greer, told Behind the Story that a woman reached out to her in the last few weeks with new information on Samantha Azzopardi.

"Samantha Azzopardi is not a particularly common name, you would think, but actually in Australia there are a few of them," she said.

"We were contacted by a woman called Courtney, whose partner’s name is Samantha Azzopardi, (who) goes by Sam." She shares the same name as ‘Samantha Azzopardi’, found outside the GPO.

Ms Greer said Sam and her partner - who had recently had a baby - applied for parental leave payments but were mistakenly told they had already received $30,000 in job seekers allowance.

The couple subsequently received a text message for a social services appointment, which they did not make. For Sam, it was obvious someone else was using her name.

"When they alerted the authorities, they were ready for this person, whoever it was going to be that arrived for the appointment," Ms Greer said.

"The police were called in, and they were able to check and see that it was, in fact, the fraudster Samantha Azzopardi.

"They confronted her, asked her for ID and at that point she fled."

Ms Greer said while she was making the podcast series, it was never clear how Samantha Azzopardi was funding her travels - but this recent behaviour appears to point to her using other people’s names to defraud welfare systems.
