Watch: Inside one of Kharkiv's underground schools

Pupils at schools in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv have attended classes under ground since 2024 as a security precaution against daily Russian drone and missile strikes on the city.

Kharkiv, located 30km from the frontline, was heavily bombed by Russian forces at the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Air raid alerts currently sound multiple times each day to warn residents of incoming attacks.

RTÉ News visited two of the city's 21 underground schools, which teach approximately 55,000 children in purpose-built shelters and metro stations.

"The most important thing [is] that they do not think about bombs and everything because this place is really safe," said Kateryna Chyryk, an English-language teacher at one of the schools.
