Watch: Panto dame leaving Gaiety behind after 34 years

An actor who has starred as the dame in the Gaiety Theatre panto for the last 14 years is leaving the show behind him.

Joe Conlan first took to the stage in the Gaiety at the age of 18 and has been involved with the panto for 34 years.

He will give his final performance at the theatre this evening when he takes his final bow as Nana Potts in Beauty and the Beast.

"It's been a joy," he told RTÉ News.

"My aim was not to be the Gaiety dame. But to think back to being up at the very back of the stage as 'head tree’ with loads of wonderful people, and now to be up the front closing the show."

Mr Conlan decided that the time was right to step away from the panto to focus on other creative projects.

"One door closes and another is going to open to try all those new challenges. If you don't try them, how do you know? Even if they don't work out, it's not the end of the world because you tried it," he said.
