Parents and guardians are being encouraged to indicate what kind of primary schools they would like to have by participating in a Department of Education survey that closes tonight.

The department says that 47% of eligible households have filled out the questionnaire, with over 230,000 responses so far.

The survey - the largest of its kind ever undertaken in Ireland - is school-specific and aims to assess parental demand and preferences for different types of primary school provision, including patronage/ethos, co-education or single-sex school provision and language of instruction (English or Irish).

It is available on the Department of Education's website.

Parents and guardians of children who are either in, or have yet to start, primary school are eligible to participate, as are school staff and boards of management.

All responses to the survey are confidential and anonymous.

The department says it will use the survey results to input into its analysis of national, local and school-specific data, to help it plan for schools into the future.

It says that where there is clear support for change to be considered, a further process of inclusive dialogue will begin.
